Governance in 2026: use the right guide and ask sharper questions

Governors have limited meeting time. A pack full of information is only useful if it helps them identify what needs scrutiny and what happens next.

DfE publishes separate governance guides for maintained schools and academy trusts. Begin with the guide for your structure. The old article's general Governance Handbook wording has been updated; the URL is retained for existing readers.

The maintained-schools guide was updated in July 2026. Academy trustees should use the academy trust governance guide alongside applicable trust requirements. Do not assume a statement about one structure transfers unchanged to another.

Turn the report into questions

Our suggested agenda note is short: the decision or assurance needed, the evidence, the main uncertainty and the next review. Ask what changed since the previous meeting and which action needs board attention.

If a chart shows improvement, ask about the period, denominator and comparison. If a risk is marked green, ask what evidence supports that assessment.

Keep the follow-through

Record the decision, owner and date for returning to it. Distinguish a question answered from an action completed. The minutes should allow someone absent from the meeting to understand the reasoning.
