SIAMS: connect your school's vision to lived experience

A vision statement is easy to find on a website. Explaining how it shapes daily school life takes a different kind of conversation.

The National Society for Education publishes SIAMS inspection materials, including a September 2026 framework. Check the version relevant to your inspection and work with your diocesan support. Do not treat an Ofsted checklist as a substitute.

Start with a real decision

Our suggestion is to choose a decision about school life and explain how the school's vision influenced it. What did leaders consider? What happened? Whose experience helps you evaluate it?

A useful example can include difficulty or a change of mind. Evidence does not become stronger because the account avoids every complication.

Listen beyond the document

Gather perspectives through normal school processes. Consider whether pupils, staff and families recognise the experience described by leaders. Keep examples grounded and handle personal information appropriately.

A display or policy may explain an intention. It does not on its own establish the experience of the people in school.

Keep the review connected

Link the question, evidence, conclusion and next action. Make ownership clear. Revisit whether the action helped, rather than simply marking it complete.
